TASTE a charity aiming to transform science education in rural Uganda by giving students the chance to perform experiments in lessons.

The idea for TASTE emerged in the summer of 2011 when its founder, Amy Buchanan-Hughes, was volunteering for a school in rural Uganda. She found that although science lessons were compulsory and therefore frequent, facilities for students to experience science firsthand were seriously lacking. Individual schools could not afford to invest in sufficiently well equipped laboratories to allow regular student practical classes.

Amy began to imagine an organisation which would send mobile laboratories to visit schools in rural Uganda. Each laboratory would only need to buy equipment once, but would be able to provide thousands of students with regular access to its facilities and well-trained staff. She consulted with local headteachers, students and community leaders and found strong support for the idea.

Co-directors Elizabeth Kyewalabye and Ivan Bwowe joined the project in September 2011 and TASTE Uganda was registered in Uganda as a Community Based Organisation. Taste UK was founded soon after with the aim of raising funds and equipment donations for mobile laboratories from donors outside Uganda, and became registered with the Charity Commission in 2012.

Thanks to the support of our funders and donors, TASTE was able to purchase a van and equipment, and began to operate in Uganda for the start of the 2013 school year. In its first month reached more than one thousand students, and this figure continues to rise.

TASTE is an organisation in its infancy, rapidly growing with the assistance of academics, teachers and donors around the world. We welcome support from anyone, anywhere; if you are interested please find out how to help.

How would you like to own your own African city? Nairobi perhaps? Casablanca or even Accra? Well now you can – in a sense. Million Dollar Earth allows you to unify your social media outlets in one location while associating your brand with a unique city or iconic landmark.

Mixing beer with creativity was what it took to imagine MillionDollarEarth.com. Longtime friends Ryan Hart, a twenty six year old entrepreneur, and web designer Scott Dahl’s conversation flowed to the success of Alex Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage. Both admired the simplistic genius of selling a million pixels of ad space at one dollar a pixel, but felt that the idea could be improved upon. “What would happen if that idea could be reapplied so that someone could “own” the virtual pinpoints within Google Maps,” Hart mused. “Someone could virtually own an entire city.” Plans began forming and soon they reached the final product: MillionDollarEarth.com. Clients can now purchase one of 1,000 cities worldwide for approximately a thousand dollars each. Primary pricing is based on each city’s audience or population size. Each city comes equipped with many options included on its map tab including: a Facebook fan page, Twitter feed, YouTube videos, as well as a custom text box.

Both Hart and Dahl are passionate about using the platform and the proceeds from MillionDollarEarth.com to make a difference in the lives of people around the world who do not have safe water to drink. Ten percent of the proceeds will be given to Charity: Water, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing clean and safe drinking water to millions of people developing nations. “Online there has been no unique voice in advertising,” says Hart. “I want this website to change that and be the creative wall for businesses to hang their advertisement on.”

There are 1,000 pins for an average of $1,000 each, totaling $1M in advertising space. The 20 most expensive pins show at any time. Link Directly to your pin, for example, www.milliondollarearth.com/johannesburg

What’s more, you can sell your city or landmark on for a profit if someone wants to buy it from you.

At present, Million Dollar Earth is running a campaign on indiegogo.com and have until 31st August to raise $12,000 to purchase the annual Google API License. They have already reached and reinvested $29,000+ in sales, 70% of which are international, have visitors 101+ countries, and translated the website into 33 different languages.

You can help fund the campaign and receive 50%-85% off a city, landmark, zip code, or continent of your choice. First come first serve, browse the website and use the tool in the lower left to find what cities are in each price level, then include your top 3 in your pledge to reserve your spot.

If that’s not incentive enough to get involved, Million Dollar Earth have teamed up with HomepageAfrica.com so anyone who buys an African city or landmark will also get free space for the country of their choice on Homepage Africa, forever.

Check out the video for more information about the indiegogo.com campaign.

SOS Africa was founded in January 2003 by a then gap year student, Matt Crowcombe and school teacher, Henry Matthews. During his placement at the International School of South Africa in Mafikeng, Henry made Matt aware of the widespread poverty and poor standard of education of African children which existed throughout the local townships. Henry also introduced Matt to Thabo, a young township child who attended Henry’s church.

Terms and Conditions

Only the 5,500 yellow, green, orange, purple and dark blue squares are for sale. The pale blue squares are not for sale

The minimum purchase is £10 (1 square), and the maximum purchase is however many are left. (The normal price of 1 square is £99 but we have our bonanza £10 per square for the next 500 squares on at the moment). VAT is payable where applicable.

When you ‘buy’ the squares you will not actually ‘own’ any part of this site, but rather we grant you the right to submit an image and link which will then be published on the homepage & country page in the respective space you have paid for.

Images can only appear on individual countries. ie a 2 x 3 image cannot start in Ghana, continue into Togo and finish in Benin. This wouldn’t make the individual country pages look very good. This does, however, mean that if you buy a square or squares for a country with very little area such as The Gambia or the islands of Comoros or São Tomé and Príncipe, your larger logo may well be the only one on that page!

You cannot change the image or link once you have submitted them, so you must be sure of the image & link you want to use which will be on the site for at least 5 years. The only exception is if you have a strong reason why you need a change to your image or link, eg. your site no longer exists, lawsuits, etc.

The site and homepage will be online for at least 5 years (starting from the day it launched), so at least until 1st January 2016, but hopefully longer, possibly even forever!

Homepage Africa operates a strict no refund policy. Once payments are made you cannot get a refund.

No obscene/offensive/adult images or links will be accepted. If an image/link is deemed inappropriate, you will have the opportunity to provide an alternative, otherwise you will lose your money and your squares.

If your link is accepted and you later change the content of the linked site to show offensive/obscene/adult material then your link will be removed until you provide a new one, and you will not get a refund of any kind for the link downtime.

If for whatever reason you want your image and link removed from the site you can, but you will not get a refund and the space will become publicly available again.

You must supply 2 versions of the image; 1 for the homepage and 1 for the individual country page.

Images must be the exact sizes for the space you have paid for. These also take into account the 2 pixel space between the squares, so you do actually receive extra space on top of the actual squares if you buy more than 1:

1 x 1 = 10 x 10 pixels & 38 x 38 pixels

1 x 2 = 10 x 22 pixels & 38 x 78 pixels

2 x 2 = 22 x 22 pixels & 78 x 78 pixels

If you need us to resize your image for you from an original we can do so. Please bear in mind that this may “squeeze” or “stretch” the appearance depending on the original dimensions

Images must be in GIF or JPEG format, and a reasonable file size

Images must NOT be animated

Links must be to web pages only and begin with http://

You must have the authority to provide the image and link for the website you submit

Funds must be fully received and cleared before your images and links go live

There may be occasional downtime for site maintenance but this will be kept to a minimum

Once you have ordered and the funds have cleared (ie. in our PayPal account), we will aim to get your image and link online within 24-48hrs. However, please be patient if we receive lots of orders at once

10% of net revenue from the sale of Homepage Africa squares will be donated to African education charities
